Here are the roles:
Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart and Maggie are villagers. They have no specific powers, but Homer can be trouble for Frank Grimes (see below)
Lenny and Carl are villagers. They’re aware of each other and can talk to each other during the day. It’s the Stonecutter versions of Lenny and Carl, if you were curious.
Helen Lovejoy is the seer, because she’s so damned nosy.
Mayor Quimby is a villager. One time, if he doesn’t like the way things are going, he can declare himself to be Quimby and he has sole voting power that day. As soon as he casts a vote, the decision is made.
Moe is a villager. He’s annoying, though. He can give a Flaming Moe to one villager per day, and he can decide what Sprinfielder that person has to imitate for the entirety of the next day.
Ned Flanders is a villager, and the angel. He protects one person of his choosing every night, but it can’t be the same person twice in a row. He also can’t protect himself.
Mr. Burns is a wolf.
Snake is a wolf.
Mr. Smithers is a wolf, and during the day, he can go on a kamikaze mission, killing any villager he chooses plus himself.
Frank Grimes is a wolf. If the village lynches Homer during the day, Homer’s corpse falls on Grimes and kills him as well.
I’ll email your roles post-haste, and will begin DAY in a few hours, I suspect.

Note that I’m on the west coast, so DAY might not begin until about 6-7am tomorrow over here. It depends on how long the wolves want to talk, and how long it takes to get my other night things.

This is Springfield; a bustling, diverse area that was once named the fattest city in the state of –
“Ach! Look around ye, everyone! One of ye bastards is a werewolf!” Groundskeeper Willie yells as he intrudes upon a meeting at City Hall.
Those present laugh Willie off until he holds up the severed head of Hans Moleman in one hand, and the rest of him in another. Because Springfield is the type of city it is, the mob immediately accepts the werewolf theory and starts pointing fingers.
“It must have been Flanders!” Homer yells, brandishing a pitchfork, chasing people around until it’s pointed out to him that Flanders isn’t present. “Fine, I’ll kill him later.”
Marge does her disapproving growl (okay, growl probably isn’t the best word right now) and the mob starts deciding who they should lynch.

My “Most Dangerous to the Wolves” list:
1. seer
2. Homer
3. angel
4. Maggie
I guess Quimby could be on there, but his role would seem unlikely to play a role on day one. Does that match with your thinking?
October 24, 2011 at 10:48 am

Maggie? That’s a joke, right? I agree with your first three, for sure. I’m not sure about Quimby yet.

I almost did the Homer-Grimes thing for Maggie-Burns as well, but figured that was too strong. This game is probably already too in favor of the village, which is the exact opposite of what I was going to try to do, since the wolves have had a rough go of things lately.

I hadn’t mentioned these things, but for noobs and those who just want a refresher, here you go:
*Votes must always be in a new comment; not nested
*The “two strike” rule is in effect. If a majority is not reached and we get to the deadline, everyone who hasn’t voted receives a strike. Two strikes = mod kill.

Wrong. Voting would continue, and nobody’s vote would change, unless they were voting for one of the two people now dead.

I think also, since Smithers (also Quimby) has the power to announce their role and perform an action during the day, anybody who does this and is not the person they are claiming to be should be mod killed–at least that’s the way we did it in MISH MASH 1 when I was the terrorist.
October 24, 2011 at 10:57 am
spookymilk
I wondered how that was handled normally. I figured if someone claimed to be one of those two and wasn’t (I’m not sure why anyone would claim to be Smithers if they weren’t, but whatever), I’d just have to say “Yeah, that’s not who you are” or something, and they’d expose themselves in a way they hadn’t intended.

I didn’t mention it above because I was wondering how to deal with it, but the person who received the Flaming Moe must have their designated character present in every post, under threat of mod-kill. I’ll be lenient about what that entails, but if I detect no hint of that character, it’s death, dudes.
October 24, 2011 at 11:47 am
hungry joe
i’m still a little confused by this role. does moe decide which character they have to be? does it have to be one of the characters in this game? and, uh, what’s the point?
October 24, 2011 at 11:52 am
cheaptoy1
I think I can take a crack at this: Moe decides which character, but it does not have to be one in this game, just one from the Simpsons in general. I believe the point is to be annoying to whoever gets the drink and to maybe try to unlock a gold nugget like SBG put forth with the slurred speech effect from the speakeasy.
That’s my guess, anyway.
October 24, 2011 at 11:53 am
spookymilk
Bingo. There’s no point. I was going to roll those things randomly on my own, but I figured if I was going to do something specific like that, why not give the role to a player and make it a character who’s kind of a dick?

I appreciate that you’ve taken my advice to heart and aren’t taking aggressive action against anybody who votes for you, but anything you say as a villager that would “prove” you’re a villager could also be said as a wolf to “prove” you’re a villager. I am a little surprised that GH has decided that I’m the person who should go, but there is some time so I’m not too worried. I would pay attention to who is driving a early vote, and recommend against getting too close to a majority before nightfall, since that really only helps the wolves.

getting adobery to talk is hardly a difficult accomplishment.
I’m trying to get some discussion going and give the village something to go on in future days. A 10-way tie at one vote doesn’t do that. I tried to break the logjam, and, presto! lots of discussion! people taking sides!

meat is playing like meat always plays, which tends to elicit a lot of suspicion for some reason. Normally with you, I get a feeling that I can immediately trust you, but I don’t have that this time. So that makes me a bit wary.

meat’s been a wolf 2 of the last 3 games. If he’s playing like he has in past games, I can see why that generates suspicion.

I thought much the same as you, dear Greekhous. Please join me in a verse or two my fellow thespian.
[Myself]
Things are seldom what they seem,
Skim milk masquerades as cream;
Highlows pass as patent leathers;
Jackdaws strut in peacock’s feathers.
[GH] (puzzled)
Very true,
So they do.
[Myself]
Black sheep dwell in every fold;
All that glitters is not gold;
Storks turn out to be but logs;
Bulls are but inflated frogs.
[GH] (puzzled)
So they be,
Frequentlee.
[Myself]
Drops the wind and stops the mill;
Turbot is ambitious brill;
Gild the farthing if you will,
Yet it is a farthing still.
[GH] (puzzled)
Yes, I know.
That is so.
Though to catch your drift I’m striving,
It is shady — it is shady;
I don’t see at what you’re driving,
Mystic lady — mystic lady.
[Both] (aside)
Stern conviction’s o’er me/him stealing,
That the mystic lady’s dealing
In oracular revealing.
[GH]
Yes, I know —
[Myself]
That is so!
[GH]
Though I’m anything but clever,
I could talk like that for ever:
Once a cat was killed by care,
Only brave deserve the fair.
[Myself]
Very true,
So they do.
[GH]
Wink is often good as nod;
Spoils the child who spares the rod;
Thirsty lambs run foxy dangers;
Dogs are found in many mangers.
[Myself]
Frequentlee,
I agree.

Paw of cat the chestnut snatches;
Worn-out garments show new patches;
Only count the chick that hatches;
Men are grown-up catchy-catchies.
[Myself]
Yes, I know,
That is so.

I’ll dissemble — I’ll dissemble;
When he sees at what I’m driving,
Let him tremble — let him tremble!

Here today and gone tomorrow.

Cheaptoy was quick to point how he “accidently may have” gave his status away as a villager, when it most likely would have went unnoticed. It almost seems too convenient a veteran player would accidently proclaim his status only to turn around and then announce his mistake to the world to make sure it is indeed noticed. Too much attention. Myself, I’ve gone silent most of the day after a quick start as I have settled on my vote for the day.
Also cheaptoy’s prefence of ergo over eggos was not helpful. It is indeed known that wolves only enjoy humans and not food such as eggos

I didn’t accidentally give my Bart-ness away, I did that on purpose and I think I went out of my way to point it out to make sure everyone knows who I am. Powerless? Sure. A troublemaker? You better believe it. A wolf? No sir.
It is not known.
October 24, 2011 at 8:15 pm

you did that on purpose as to cover up that you really are a wolf. What you say and what the truth may be are not always one in the same. I still hold firm that you sir are indeed a wolf and will not waver from that claim.

I would scoff at the idea that of all the time my fellow villagers have spent with you, cheaptoy, they can you your words and honesty go hand in hand. Here are my thoughts going into this vote:
Cheaptoy makes the early I’m a villager play. Could be a villager, could be crazy like a fox.
Greek makes an early play to get a bandwagon rolling on rob without much explanation. Topher joins the rob wagon early, and officially votes when the rob cart gains some speed.
Adobery = sideshow bob, could be a great cover for a wolf. He gets to play the villain without much suspicion being cast on him, but he doesn’t seem too wolfy.
Rob – I’m not really seeing it, what did he do that is driving up the stock?
DG is pushing all sorts of buttons looking for dialogue, could be helpful, but could be too helpful
Topher makes some early remarks that I don’t really understand (i’m probably missing the cultural reference), but he also seems to be early and often on the Rob cart.
TDO doesn’t defend himself when HJ votes him. HJ sees something suspicious about that. TDO then turns the cannon onto CT which casts more suspicion in his direction.
Corey, bhiggs, Nibbish, Grey, Strat, the dread pirate, and HJ haven’t offered much up in the way of info………..

I never said I was known for honesty, just that I was being honest and forthcoming. I feel I’ve defended myself pretty well here today.
October 24, 2011 at 8:57 pm
Robert Underdunk Terwilliger Jr.
I have pondered the Cheaptoy / TDO situation and I am still not quite seeing the same things as our dear TDO does, but I am not convinced either is a wolf. Mr. TDO could just be showing his amateur rank. He may well have picked up on something I have not, as I will not claim to be an expert in these matters. Our often eyed Cheaptoy may just be a fidgety fool.
Secondly, the Springfield book club consists mainly of citizens who club *me* with books.These are from the new Dean Koontz. Although I must say it’s less painful than reading him. Am I right, folks?
Thirdly, I am wary of our highly regarded Greekhouse. He oft toes the line, but as I recall, he was much more forthright last time in providing his opinion on first day strategy, rather than just posing the questions waiting for answers. He has flittered his opinions of agreement out there without casting the first stone several times. However, he is of more value as a prized citizen than he is a danger as a wolf, so best we let him live and torture his canine soul another day if need be.
Also, do we need to consider buldozing Mr. Simpson’s house if we cannot find another party more worthy of our citizens ire? So sorry, Mr. Simpson, but your house is blocking construction of our new Matlock Expressway. Now, I am a fair man. We still have an hour to decide whether this in necessary. After which time, we will blow up your house and any remaining Simpsons.
Wherefore art though Bart?

October 24, 2011 at 9:09 pm

Not really. Homer could just come forward and say “vote for me”. I don’t think it’s a terrible strategy, but it shouldn’t be a last minute thing, since if he doesn’t get the votes, the wolves will likely kill him at night.

Guys, I’m going to institute sudden death in this one, and see what happens. If there’s a tie at the deadline, I’ll open up a fifteen minute period wherein a single switched or new vote for one of those tied will make the decision, and otherwise, it’s up to random draw.

October 24, 2011 at 9:18 pm

It may not be a bad idea, but I think the only way you’re going to get someone to come out and do it is if Homer is someone who does not have a lot of time to be involved the next couple days and wants to get out early.

October 24, 2011 at 9:19 pm

I think there’s good and bad to this idea.
Good – get a wolf (either Grimes or Smithers)
Bad – Smithers kill doesn’t stop the vote (which will be swung toward Homer, so could be easily swayed by the more lupine among us).
October 24, 2011 at 9:22 pm
greekhouse
Isn’t the info gained by knowing the identity of a single wolf going to help us a lot more than having an extra villager? I mean, we’re probably lynching a villager anyway.
I feel like there is actually a lot of information to be gleaned from this day 1 and once we know the identity of one of the wolves, that will help us interpret it.
October 24, 2011 at 9:28 pm
cheaptoy1
If I’ve learned nothing from previous games, and I haven’t, it does seem that figuring out the first wolf cascades down to the rest fairly quickly, so you do make a good point. That said, I really don’t think Homer is going to be willing to give himself up for the good of the team on day 1.
October 24, 2011 at 9:28 pm
daneekasghost
I think giving the wolves three shots at villagers (smithers, vote, night kill) is a lot of potential for disaster.
I thought about this earlier today (kind of where I was going with my attempted discussion of new roles) but thought that the risk was pretty high.

Well, the wolves get a night kill regardless and the villagers will likely vote off a villager otherwise. So we’re really only sacrificing one for one.
I thought about it earlier too, but my feeling was that I didn’t want to just kill a wolf early and gain no info. Now, I think the info is out there and the time to kill Homer is now.

That’s where we differ I guess. I feel confident TDO is a wolf. You seem to think that we’ll lynch a villager.

Why kill someone only you seem to suspect is a wolf tonight and give the wolves a chance to find Homer tonight? Why not use Homer now and then kill someone else tomorrow when we have more info.

well with 30 minutes left i do not see using homer as a valid option tonight.
A wolf is typically seen as someone who is not trustworthy, cheaptoy has stated himself he is not known for honesty.

You’ve got to be kidding me. I don’t see going Homer as an option because now with 27minutes left homer hasn’t presented himself! If he wants to present himself I will vote for homer 100%. Until then my “little” evidence is more than anyone else has about anyone else in my humble opinion.

Keep in mind, Quimby is out there too. He can step in and make sure Homer gets killed if it looks like it’s not going to happen.

Yeah, it’s no longer 1a and 1b for me. TDO is desperate not to get voted off for some reason. I just hope it’s not because he’s the seer.

I think a seer would be more actively defending themselves as villager in a desperate attempt to not get voted off rather than desperately trying to shift suspicion to a villager.

Never mind the why and wherefore,
Seers can level ranks, and therefore
I admit the jurisdiction;
Ably have you played your part;
You have carried firm conviction
To my hesitating heart.
If TDO is the seer, I see no reason for him to not have come out now. If he were the seer he must know death is emminent. If he were the seer and we spared him, the angel could surely protect him tonight. There could be some confusion there with wolf ploys though and leaving him alive if he was wrong in his Cheaptoy convictions.
October 24, 2011 at 9:49 pm

The angel can’t protect the same person on back to back nights. So if we did save him somehow, it would likely only buy us one day. At least he will have caught one wolf, though.

If there’s one thing Springfield loves, it’s a witch trial. All the village’s women are accused, mostly by Homer. “I think Maude Flanders is a wolf!” he yells.
“Homer, Maude has been dead for years,” Ned says sadly.
Homer distracts himself by trying to remember this detail just long enough for the mob to string up Marge Simpson and hang her from the gallows. She isn’t a wolf.
Homer blames Ned, and chases him out of the town square.

Before nightfall, another city hall meeting is called. Mayor Quimby addresses the crowd.
“We, uh, didn’t do so well today. Now more than ever, we, uh, must look to our leadership. If anyone has suggestions on who might lead this city against this problem, I will now open up the floor.”
Sideshow Mel stands up. “A werewolf!” he yells.
“Well, I hardly think that would–” Quimby can’t get out the rest of the statement, as he’s mauled to death by a werewolf that jumps out the window before anyone can move.
From the back, Grampa says, “Well, that’s an onion in the ointment.”
