Maroon works with one r, but wouldn’t with 2.

Dang it. Maroon doesn’t work either way.
June 19, 2016 at 12:27 pm

Hey, at least I learned there’s an archaic two-r spelling of “maroon.”

Fun fact: “rusts” works, but wouldn’t have worked two weeks ago.

That two-weeks-ago clue really threw me off. I’ll be back in a while to try again.

Most of the in and out words are not dependent on what happened two weeks ago.
There are a few though.

That two weeks ago remark really has me flummoxed. Even if it only culls a small number of words, it still suggests that whatever determines what’s in or out is at least partially time-sensitive, and so any potential rule I come up with has to be checked for a time-sensitive variable. And that….sucks.
Time
Sensitive
Variable
June 19, 2016 at 6:11 pm
daneekasghost
The pool of in words recently expanded. I’m not sure if everyone would consider this a time sensitive criteria, but that fact was offered more as trivia than as a clue that would be meaningfully helpful.

I should also note that the 4 letter minimum is mostly because there are so many short words that fit, the length is not inherent to the category.
Perhaps some more pointed examples?
