“And that…” Diane Chambers beamed, cocking her head at her unsuspecting customers, “is when Chaucer cheekily proclaimed ‘That ain’t my Canterbury Tale'” Diane let out her high-pitched chortle, drowning out the laughter of nobody.
“Hey there,” Sam said, beckoning her to the bar. “I think you’re wearing them out with your comedy.”
Diane shimmied over and leaned in. “Like I wore you out last night?”
“Uh huh,” Sam smiled.
“It’s time for my break,” she winked. “Think I’ll take it in your office.”
Sam leaned against the bar and watched her disappear into his sanctuary. Then he leaned over and grinned at Norm and Cliff.
“Atta boy Sammy,” said Norm. “Have some more paperwork to catch up on?”
“Ho ho ho!” Cliff followed.
Sam just tapped the bar a couple times and jaunted over to his office. Upon opening the door, he let out a yelp. Diane was on his desk, spread eagle. Also, limp.
“Something wrong, Sam?” Cliff asked.
Sam fisted his balls in rage. “Dammit, Gary!” he yelled. “He does this every year. Pretends to kill all my friends, and then when I’ve completely cracked, he pops into the bar and has a good laugh at my expense. But not this year. This year, I’m going to catch that son of a bitch before that happens.”
“Is Diane all right,” Peter asks?
“Well, she looks dead,” Sam says. “But Gary will revive her and everyone else as soon as he thinks he’s won. I need you guys to help me catch him in the act. Any volunteers?”
“Well,” Frasier piped up. “Any man who can shut Diane up for a few days is a hero in my book. But, hell, I hate Gary almost as much. Where should we start?”
Game Structure: There will be no night wolf kills. After all, the bar is open at night! Every kill will be done via lynching. The wolves still win if they equal the number of remaining villagers (not including the neutral). The wolves will still get to talk strategy at night.
Sam Malone (Villager, Linchpin): Without Sam, everything at the bar falls apart. The patrons must do everything in their power to keep him around. If Sam is lynched, the wolves win. But! Sam is such a thoughtful and observant bartender that he can immediately sniff out any impostors. Sam has been notified who all the wolves are.
Norm Peterson (Villager, Angel): If Sam is gone, Norm will run out of free beer. Therefore, he’ll be trying extra hard to keep him alive. Norm will get a chance each night to protect another player the following day. He will notify the mod at night (including Night 0) about who he’d like to protect. He can protect the same player every day if he wants. After all, if he’s snuffed out Sam but the wolves haven’t, then more power to him. His identity will be revealed upon death.
Harry the Hat (Neutral): While Harry has a soft spot for Sam, this only goes as far as he can profit. And for him to be profit, he needs to con as many people as possible for as long as possible. Harry will know who he is, but his role will not be announced to anyone else. His job will be to try to keep the game going as long as possible, keeping Sam and the wolves alive. If he can make it until there are only 5 players (including himself) remaining, he will win and be removed from the game. If he is killed, his role will be revealed.
Gary and his friends (Wolves): There are no differences between the wolves. However, they all have one special power that will prevent Sam from role-claiming. At any point when there is only one wolf remaining, that wolf can decide to kill any villager on the spot. This is obviously a reckless move and designed only to prevent a role-claim. The wolf can also use it as a last ditch effort if he’s about to be lynched, but he must decide to do so before the majority vote against him is cast. The reason I’m only allowing this with one wolf left is so that the the first two wolves don’t get a chance for a “free shot” at Sam as they’re about to die. If Sam were to make his identity obvious, it will be the responsibility of the final wolf to catch this and kill him when the time comes.

So is there any reason for Norm not to reveal himself/herself?
It narrows down the field for Sam for the wolves by 1, but we get a confirmed villager, with no threat of night kill. The wolves can win by either getting Sam or outlasting the village, so the sure-thing villager helps us avoid scenario two, but hurts a little on the first one?
March 11, 2019 at 3:06 pm
beezypoof
I think anything that narrows the Sam field down by one is probably not that great a decision. It also keep Norm from protecting someone every night for the following day. Am I wrong?
March 11, 2019 at 3:07 pm
beezypoof
Cu they’d just kill Norm off?
March 11, 2019 at 3:09 pm
adobery
The wolves can’t just decide who to kill at night this time. They have to manipulate the vote to get rid of who they want WITHOUT making it obvious who they are. So trying to off a claimed Norm role would be difficult.
March 11, 2019 at 4:12 pm
beezypoof
Also: what stops a wolf from reporting as Norm first? And then they can control votes cuz they know villagers are likely to go with “villager” votes (believing the Norm-calling wolf to be the actual Norm), and would believe that any mistakes “Norm” makes are regular old villager mistakes that we make all the time in the first sevral days. Which would give th wolves a BIG headsart.
Plus…since when would we ever believe a role-reporter, real or not? We trust no one.
The only thing that’s for SURE gained by having Norm, or “Norm,” out themselves is for the wolves: knowing one villager who ISN’T Sam.
I think.
March 11, 2019 at 4:22 pm
adobery
Bold move to claim Norm as a wolf. It does give them the possibility to create confusion and hope villagers off the wrong one. That would give the villagers a wolf too.
Even if a villager and wolf both claimed, the villagers could chose to not lynch either, keeping Norm alive and knowing they have one wolf in the two for a later date when it becomes clearer.
March 11, 2019 at 4:27 pm
beezypoof
True. If we choose not to lynch either until later, thy still are one closer to finding Sam.
If we lynch either, we know who one wolf is. But that leaves two wolves who are still one sstep closer to knowing who Sam is.
Isn’t he (Sam) the most important role?
March 11, 2019 at 4:33 pm
mbnovak
He is. The wolves can win either by getting Sam lynched or by getting to the same number as the village. The win conditions for the village are the same as always. So we’ve gotta be wolf-hunting just as much as usual, not just focused on protecting Sam. Narrowing our pool of candidates does that (though not without costs, and the wolves’ pool of Sams narrows too, obviously).
March 11, 2019 at 4:37 pm
adobery
Wolves having one less villager to think as Sam isn’t a big deal compared to not accidentally lynching Norm, who can protect Sam and keep villager numbers up for more days.
Norm known = 8 villagers to 3 wolves presently. That gives us 7 days to eliminate 3 wolves (?).
March 11, 2019 at 4:23 pm
daneekasghost
If a wolf claims Norm, the real Norm knows not to protect that wolf, which makes his Sam-saving powers more accurate as well.
March 11, 2019 at 4:26 pm
mbnovak
Well, we could always test the Norm claim by trying to lynch the person saved, and then if that person is saved, we know it’s actually Norm.
I don’t know that anything stops a wolf from making a fake claim, but even if they do we we can still do the testing thing, without killing either claimer, and then we still end up with a known-Norm and a known wolf.
March 11, 2019 at 4:30 pm
adobery
This assumes both Norm’s don’t say who they “saved”.
March 11, 2019 at 4:34 pm
mbnovak
No, it assumes they do say who they saved. Why wouldn’t they? Then we can test it.
March 11, 2019 at 4:39 pm
adobery
Okay. If we got lucky, we’d not lynch a villager and find out wolf. If we’re unlucky, we lynch the wolf’s “saved villager”, but we still find out wolf.
March 11, 2019 at 3:08 pm
punmanbowler
The only thing I can think of is that then Norm would want to save himself, otherwise the wolves could pick him off. However with there being no night kill, (all kills would be with votes), then once Norm role claims, the villagers would be insane to vote for him. About the only thing the wolves could do is try to role claim Norm as well.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Norm’s angel protections are good for both lynchings and the wolf’s final shot.
March 11, 2019 at 4:47 pm
beezypoof
But, just to be clear, he DOESN’T know who the wolves are, correct? If he does, I get why Novak suggested the test thing. But if he doesn’t, it’s possible he could save a wolf, and then we’d think he was fake Norm, even though he’s real Norm, right?
March 11, 2019 at 4:50 pm
Beau
Norm has not been told who the wolves are. Also, ignore my above announcement.
March 11, 2019 at 4:56 pm
beezypoof
So Novak…i’m interested in your thoughts here, then. If Norm doesn’t know who the wolves are, we don’t know that he’d for sure save a villager. So what would happen if Norm saves a wolf, before we have much to go on (like his night zero protection last night), and “Norm” saves a villager, as he would since he DOES know who the wolves are? We’d end up thinking fake “Norm” was real Norm, lynch real Norm (which would aid the wolves), and the wolves are now not only closer to knowing who Sam is, but also have done away with the villager who can night save us. You wouldn’t typically allow this kind of hole in your logic.
What gives? Am I just seeing it all wrong?
March 11, 2019 at 5:03 pm
mbnovak
You’re seeing it wrong. I just put it down below. We’re not learning anything about the person Norm saved, just confirming who Norm is. If Norm saved a wolf, so be it. He had no way of knowing.
March 11, 2019 at 5:04 pm
mbnovak
Also, I don’t mean to be mean with the “seeing it wrong” thing – I was just stealing your language. After we got all frustrated with each other last time we played, I want to be up front about that: if I’m seeming mean, please, let me know and I’ll do my best.
March 11, 2019 at 5:00 pm
mbnovak
No, we’ll know he’s real Norm, no matter what, if we try to lynch the person he saved and that person is, in fact, saved.
Norm doesn’t know if he’s saving a wolf or a villager, but he’s saving someone, so if that person can’t be lynched, then we know who Norm is (we know nothing about the person he saved).
On the other hand, if there’s a fake norm claim and they say who they “saved” and we try to lynch that person, then that person will successfully be lynched, so we’ll know that that is a fake Norm claim.
March 11, 2019 at 5:48 pm
beezypoof
Fair, but then we literally still let the wolves closer to Sam. Can anyone speak to that part of this? Asked this already, but he IS the most important player, yeah?
March 11, 2019 at 6:09 pm
beezypoof
Also: if fake “Norm” says he saved someone, and we lynch that person, we just killed another villager for the wolves, as well as then outing real Norm, and getting them now TWO places closer to Sam.
Seems like it couldn’t be THAT dumb a move. Especially when it gives them SO much information, while giving us none (except the one wolf). We’re still in the dark, and they now know the roles of three of the remaining 9 players (minus dead villager and dead wolf). They know 2 of them are wolves, and 1 is Norm, and we only know 1 in Norm.
They’re 1/3 of the way to knowing all the player roles, and we’re 8/9 of the way. So.

Ugh…I hate to say it, but killing an inactive may not actually be a good strategy in this one. Better to find someone who looks somewhat shitty. Everyone say a lot of things so I can change my vote.

Unvote spooky because that went no where at all. Plus, our quibbling about stupid minor things seems to happen every game.

Ok, so no one is around besides spooky and me? Are we just going to let Beau random.org this or does anyone else want to hunt?

I already told everyone Novak’s a wolf, I feel like that’s enough for day one.

So far nothing is really sticking out to me. Not that I’m any good reading day 1 stuff. I don’t get Will/Spooky dust up or what was a quote, etc. etc.
Novak was helpful pointing out the role claim, and Beezy has been arguing against it. I think the role claim benefits the villagers more than the wolves, but whatever.
Then there’s just a lot of inactivity. How is voting for an inactive person worse in this version of werewolf? Cause we’re more likely to hit Sam/Norm and wolves would be more bound to be active players? People who aren’t around much aren’t going to be helpful for reads later, or providing reads/valuable voting, so I’d lean towards voting for inactive still. Open to any argument.
I’ll leave my vote with DG for now. He hasn’t been much into this yet anyway. Though I did think he qualified joining the game with it not being a great idea.

If it makes you feel better, I don’t get the Will/Spooky dust-up either. I’m not sure we spar all that much.

Was what Will said about Todashy a direct quote from something? Or was he saying “Morning” by Todashy was a direct quote…which seems odd. I didn’t get how “morning” was a staged entrance.
March 11, 2019 at 8:47 pm
spookymilk
A good few games ago, someone (Annette? Viola?) came in early and just said “Morning!” Todah weirdly and relentlessly harped on this, and was just sure it was a wolf thing. So we mock it a lot.

Hasn’t been here all day. Also, not familiar with Colin Prime. Is this the original Colin (Gray, etc.) or the Colin who joined our games later, or someone completely new?

I was out to dinner with my parents. Weird to have dinner with my parents without kids around. I recommend it. Unless your parents are jerks. Mine are just weird.
Anyway, I’m going to go back through and look for random shit to harp on. (Am I doing this right?)

Off to Chipotle. Only chips though, and there’s a new Chipotle like 1 minute from my house now. So I won’t be gone long! (and still be back before 80% of you anyway)

Back, and have read up. I have a couple thoughts.
First, Beezy arguing on the Norm claim thing doesn’t actually say anything wrong. I think it makes more sense to reveal than not, but she is right that it narrows the Sam pool. I just think she’s wrong to focus on that part of it.
I think Adoberry’s contributions on that thread felt very agreeable, in a weird way.
I’m weirded out by Colin Prime not showing up at all (he’s been an absent wolf, recently. Would he do it again?), and both Todah and Nibbish not having the game in them today.

Well I certainly disagree with this vote!
I just don’t want to make too much out of nothing. Never played with Beezy I don’t think, so I wasn’t sure if her continuing on the “it reveals too much for the wolves” was a wolf move to stop us, or just her believing in that side. With all the lack of participation, I don’t know of Norm has decided to not out himself, or just isn’t around.
I’d much rather vote out someone who wasn’t here all day, then make a vote on nothing that sticks out. If more people were around, I’d advocate a Beezy vote just to see how that train rides, but we’ll never get enough input with half hour left and the ucrrent participation.

I don’t see the silent villager vote in a game where the wolves don’t get a night kill. At least not day 1. Part of the problem with silent villagers is that the wolves can leave them around. That’s not the risk here.
I don’t like Colin’s absence, and we’ll have to deal with it eventually (and Nibs (and to a lesser extent Todah, but he sort of showed up again?)), but I’d rather actually look at something, even if it’s thin.
March 11, 2019 at 9:24 pm
strategery
So, I do remember that first days are usually just casting about, but today seems particularly thin.
Zooming out, how the hell do we hunt wolves without night kills? Seems we’d have to base it strictly on attempts to influence the vote. And maybe that knowledge could have a chilling effect on hunting (not wanting to seem wolfy by advocating too strongly). Blerg. Don’t like.

“Good evening everybody…”
“Norm!”
Norm stopped in his tracks. Only one voice echoed throughout the bar. Gary’s voice.
“Oh Norm, this was too easy. You see, the bar was shut down today do a conveniently timed health inspection thanks to a concerned citizen’s complaints. There’s signs posted everywhere. Why are you here?”
Norm gulped. “To protect Sammy, you jerk. Well, and to grab a beer.”
Gary smiled. “Looks like you should have been protecting yourself.”
